External HD DVD drive for Xbox 360 coming this year

An external HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 console will be released later this year, according to Peter Moore, corporate vice president of Worldwide Marketing and Publishing for Xbox at Microsoft.
Moore made the announcement at Microsoft chairman Bill Gates’ CES 2006 keynote, stating that,
“The new drive will offer millions of Xbox 360 owners the ability to easily enjoy HD DVD movies and will provide consumers with even more choices for experiencing high-definition content, in either physical or digital form.”
The announcement of the external drive effectively ends recent speculation that Microsoft would soon be shipping a HD DVD-enabled version of the Xbox 360.
Contrary to earlier comments by Yoshihiro Maruyama, Microsoft Japan’s Xbox operations chief, it appears that some Xbox 360 games will be released in HD DVD format, with Betanews.com reporting that Microsoft hopes to have 50 HD capable games available by summer 2006.
Release date and pricing information for the external HD DVD drive have not yet been announced.
Correction: We misread “HD games” for “games in HD DVD” format (for which there was no evidence).
