Play Xbox 360 racing games in Nissan URGE concept car

Nissan and Microsoft have teamed up to integrate the Xbox 360 into Nissan’s URGE concept car.

The Nissan URGE concept car allows drivers (while parked) to play Project Gotham Racing 3 using the car’s own steering wheel, gas pedal and brake pedal while viewing the game on a flip-down seven-inch LCD screen.

“Nissan conducted an Internet survey of 2,000 echo boomers, a majority of which said technology and gaming are among the most important attributes in their first car,”

said Bruce Campbell, vice president of design at Nissan Design America.

In response to this survey, Nissan engineers integrated an Xbox 360 console so that the driver of an URGE concept car can play PGR 3 on a flip-down LCD screen (that doubles as a rear-view mirror when the car is being used for real driving).

What will they think of next, I hear you say. I can’t help but think that the good folks at Nissan have misinterpreted the survey results in a truly tragic manner.

Yes young people are interested in their first car, yes they are interested in technology, and yes they are interested in gaming, but… would they want to do some more virtual driving in between spurts of real driving, while sitting in the car?

This strikes me as a truly insane idea. In-car gaming is great to keep the kids in the back entertained… but using a real car to simulate a virtual car while staring at a teenyweeny 7-inch screen strikes me as more than just moronic.

I’d rather be dead than seen playing a racing game in my real car, looking like a fool. I’m sure most entertainment would be had by the onlookers of such a spectacle.

On the other hand, Nissan and Microsoft have to be congratulated for their stroke of genius in terms of cross advertising. The Nissan URGE concept car brings attention to the Xbox 360, and vice versa.

Summary: An idiotic idea, but a great advertising tool. I hate myself for having even written the article, that’s how well it works. :-)
