In its quest to oust rival Sony, Microsoft is making a keen effort to convince the public that the Xbox 360 offers something for everyone. The slick MTV launch event, the console’s much-hyped media capabilities, Xbox Live’s voice and text chat capabilities and now the Xbox Live Diamond Card: MS is certainly trying to challenge the notion that the Xbox 360 is just for gamers.

The Diamond Card is also an attempt to appeal to the lucrative mature gaming market: hip, affluent twentysomethings with plenty of disposable income to spend on games and other Xbox 360 paraphernalia.

Partnering with food, clothing and entertainment outlets, however, provides Microsoft with a smart way of leveraging this market sector’s expenditure on non-gaming items, as well as broadening its Xbox Live Gold subscription base.

MS may well recoup some of its $126-per-console loss with the Diamond Card. The more important effect, however, will be on the Xbox 360’s image: the Diamond Card takes the Xbox 360’s benefits into the offline world, thus breaking down the “consoles are for geeks” sterotype.
