Microsoft sued over defective Xbox 360 consoles

A Chicago man has filed a class action suit in the state of Illinois against software giant Microsoft Corp for selling defective Xbox 360 consoles.
The man who brought the claim, Robert Byers, believes that Microsoft rushed the launch of their new console in an effort to get a lead in the market over major rivals Sony and Nintendo.
As a result, he says the Xbox 360 has been released with a design flaw that causes it to overheat and freeze up.
Specifically, Byers alleges that the power supply and central processing unit in the Xbox 360 overheat, affecting heat-sensitive chips and causing the console to lock up.
In the suit, Byers is seeking unspecified damages and expenses as well as the replacement or recall of all Xbox 360 consoles.
Following the November 22 launch of the Xbox 360, reports immediately began to surface that some of the new machines were defective.
Microsoft is yet to comment on the pending court case, however, following the Xbox 360 console’s release, Molly O’Donnell, senior manager of global Xbox public relations, responded to rumors of faulty consoles by telling Reuters that some cases had been reported.
“We have received a few isolated reports of consoles not working as expected […] With any launch of this magnitude, you’re bound to see something happening,”
she said.
Whilst declining to give exact numbers, O’Donnell said the defective consoles represented a “very, very small fraction” of total units sold.
