Xbox 360 console sells out across Europe

As expected, the Xbox 360 virtually sold out within hours across Europe following its December 2 release. Much like the US launch, gamers were left wanting as the demand for the new console far outstripped the reported 300,000 units supplied to the region.

Fans queued up for hours in the hope of getting their hands on the first of the next-generation machines released. With many retailers pre-selling their Xbox 360 consoles, only a few were left to fill the shelves, leaving those who waited with little chance of taking one home.

Neil Thompson, head of Xbox in the UK, told The Times everything was being done to restock stores.

“We are working 24 hours a day with the factories and chartering every plane and ship we can, but demand is exceptionally strong and there are times when people won’t get it when they want it,”

he said.

Given the limited supply and huge demand, it seems unlikely that European consumers will be able to purchase one of the new consoles before the new year unless they can afford to spend big, with Xbox 360 consoles selling for over twice the recommended retail price via internet auction site eBay.
