Rumble Roses XX: Is Konami going too far?

Rumble Roses XX is the working title of a Xbox 360 fighting game currently under development by Konami, Japan. The game features female wrestlers rendered in great detail, with high definition graphics showing off the physique and sexy outfits of the fighters.

On its web site, Konami is presenting screenshots of the work in progress. The thumbnail images that are used to browse the screen shots demonstrate in no uncertain terms what the makers consider the game’s greatest appeal. Konami literally aims for the crotch.

The intro animation announces the game as “Sexy… Powerful… Beauty maX! Fighting spirit maX”. Presumably, this is where the “Double XX” in the title comes from. The final name of the title hasn’t been decided yet, but the XX suffix may stay to hint at the “hot” nature of the game.

The makers of the best-selling Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas came under fire when hackers found ways to unlock hidden sex scenes in the game. Another recent game, Fahrenheit, also contains graphic sex scenes, where players get rewarded for seducing female characters.

In an interview with Teamxbox, Akari Uchida of Konami had the following to say about the risque presentation and marketing of the game:

We obviously want to push the game forward in both aspects, technologically and graphically, but we aren’t making a sex game; no one is posing nude or anything like that. It’s a videogame, so we aren’t going to go too far.

I think what’s cool is walking that line, but not going over it. When it becomes too much of a porn flick then people become hesitant, and we don’t want that.

As you can see from the trailer, the costumes are so detailed that it not only looks sexy but it also looks cool. I definitely don’t think anyone will be disappointed when they buy the game.

Take the poll: Is Konami’s Rumble Roses XX too sexy?

Editor’s comment: Clearly, games have matured and mature gamers are seen as a lucrative target audience.

One wonders what comes next. GTA led the way by rewarding players for picking up prostitutes, having sex with them, then bludgeoning them to death and taking their money afterwards.

The game Fahrenheit ranks on the opposite side of the scale. The player gets rewarded with mental stability for getting laid. Here, the whole thing has a somewhat romantic connotation. Our hero is mentally disturbed. His ex-girlfriend shows up, and as the player, one has to speak nicely with her, play her a song on the guitar (and play it well too!), and then she’s all ready for you and you get to do the dirty, in full nudity and interactive animation.

Rumble Roses XX makes away with all these pesky story bits. You simply get to have half-naked girls bash each other.

None of this is really new - fighting games featuring scantily glad girls have been available for some time. What’s new with the next generation of video games is that the female characters no longer look like polygonal freaks with pyramids for breasts.

No… when the Xbox 360 hits the shelves, depiction of human characters (and character, sic!) will be televised in High Definition, warts and all.
