Rare confirms Perfect Dark Zero’s multiplayer capabilities

In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu at X05, Duncan Botwood of Rare Ltd has confirmed details of Perfect Dark Zero’s multiplayer capabilities.

Rare originally began developing “Perfect Dark Zero” as a GameCube title, but, following Microsoft’s acquisition of Rare, started modifying the game to become an Xbox title. Rare was hopeful that the shift to the Xbox platform would result in excellent multiplayer capabilities, but found that the original Xbox did not have the graphical ability to support large-scale multiplayer modes.

When “Perfect Dark Zero” is released for the Xbox 360 at launch time, it will support online play for up to 32 players. Rare had hoped to support 50 person multiplayer mode, but had to scale back PDZ’s multiplayer capabilities in order to make the deadline as an Xbox 360 launch title.

Botwood stressed, however, that Rare was hoping to make a 50 person multiplayer mode available 2-3 months following PDZ’s release. He added that the present development version of PDZ can support 50 players simultaneously, but this feature had not yet been comprehensively tested.
