Interview with Codemasters (5): Sound for Xbox 360

Exclusive Xbox 360 developer interview with Codemasters (5): Sound for Xbox 360

Xb360info.com: What can you tell us about the sound capabilities of the Xbox 360, and how are these capabilities put to use in your game(s)?

Codemasters: We now have full control of all digital processing effects, which has excited our audio team. It means more work for us (!) but much greater control. With this control I think you are going to experience a much more subtle use of audio in the game experience.

However, with that and 5.1 now being standard, people are also really going to notice the quality of the original recordings and how they stand up against the rest of the HD experience.

Xb360info.com: How do you feel about users being able to swap out the game soundtrack with their own music: is this possible or can a game disallow this feature?

Codemasters: This is about putting the user in control of the game, which is always a good thing. However, I do wonder if it might lead to some developers not putting as much effort into their soundtracks, which would be a shame. Saying that, if a team are passionate about their background music, they’ll still get it in there.

Xb360info.com: Does the Dolby Digital 5.1 standard have to be supported for each Xbox game title you are developing? Are there any games (current or in planning) that will support higher spec’ed home theatre configurations, such as Dolby EX or Dolby 6.1 or 7.1 configurations?

Codemasters: Yes – all of our titles will support 5.1 configurations as a standard, but as such a small number of the population enjoy 6.1 or 7.1 configurations, it’s not viable to spend the development time needed to support them. If these markets grow, we will certainly consider catering for 6.1 and 7.1 configurations.
