Why is Microsoft pushing gamers toward high definition? Has anyone priced these things? It's bad enough that they're milking us $400 for the "good" version of the 360, but in order to get the most out of it, we all have to have a HD TV? Bull!!!

The 360 doesn't yet support proper High-Def picture, the custom Graphics card which it boasts was designed to run on DirectX 10+ drivers (which have yet to be released). The 360 will display HD at 480p for the time being, but will not display 720p or 1080i until the next 'BIG' dashboard update or possibly until the release of DirectX 10.(even though a lot of games support 720p or higher, the 360 physically cannot display them at that quality yet)
(check xbox.com - all HD games have now had their HD compatible status changed to 'NO' until the update).

Anyone who doesn't have a HDTV to play on should buy the advanced scart lead to make the most of the 360.
The reason the advanced Scart lead is recommended is its 'RGB' display. Which is as good as it gets without being HD. Unfortunetaly even those who managed to luck out and get their hands on a Premium unit have a cable which is only worth having if they are connected to a HDTV, otherwise their 'premium cable' is exactly the same as the 'cheap and cheerful' composite AV cable supplied with the core system.
(the only difference is that the cable in the premium pack also hosts a optical output, which the Core system's doesn't).

So why is there a two hundred dollar price difference if the only difference is that there is a different kind of cable?
